With another season of road racing well underway, Trickbits Racing are once again preparing for a return to the Aberdare Park Road Races sponsored by Samco Sport, where they'll be aiming to add another chapter to their impressive history at one of the UK's most iconic circuits.
Team owner Paul Jinks has enjoyed plenty of success around the famous Victorian parkland venue over the years, and after an unforgettable 2025 that saw Ryan Dixon and Andy Smart produce one of the greatest title battles in recent memory, the team is eager to return with unfinished business.
Despite a challenging start to 2026, Jinks remains optimistic that Trickbits Racing will once again be among the front-runners when the lights go out in Aberdare this August.
Paul, thanks for taking the time to speak with us. We're already on the cusp of another season. How are preparations going?
"It's been a bit of a mixed season so far. We've had some wins and podium finishes, but we've also had our fair share of bike issues. I've put a huge amount of effort into the bike preparation over the winter, so it's been frustrating that things haven't quite gone to plan mechanically. That said, our most recent meeting at Scarborough was much more encouraging, where we finished third overall in the Supersport Pro races.
"The Supertwin has continued to throw up a few issues, but we're hopeful we've now identified the problem and can move forward. We'd originally hoped to expand our road racing programme in 2026, but the reliability issues have forced us to scale things back slightly. For now, our focus is firmly on Scarborough and Aberdare Park, and making sure we're fully prepared when we arrive."
Looking back at Aberdare Park in 2025, the battle between Ryan Dixon and Andy Smart was incredible from a spectator's point of view. Did that rivalry showcase just how good the racing is around Aberdare?
"Absolutely. Ryan had a fantastic Saturday, winning everything he rode, but Sunday became much more difficult. Andy was riding brilliantly all weekend and the pair of them were virtually inseparable every time they went out on track.
"They pushed each other to another level. Both riders broke lap records over the weekend and I think everyone watching appreciated just how special the racing was."
On Sunday Ryan suffered brake problems during the finals. What actually happened?
"That one was down to me. I made the decision to change the brake set-up for Sunday and, unfortunately, Ryan suffered brake fade in both Welsh Open Finals as a result.
"Once we'd analysed everything after the races, we reverted back to Saturday's set-up for the Dave Morgan Invitational and the issue disappeared immediately. That's racing sometimes. You make decisions believing they'll improve things, but occasionally they don't work out."
Even with those issues, Ryan's performances across the weekend were hugely impressive.
"They certainly were. To dominate Saturday the way he did and then still fight right at the front despite the brake problems says everything about Ryan as a rider. He never stopped pushing and gave absolutely everything. Those races with Andy were some of the best I've seen and they'll be remembered at Aberdare Park for a very long time."
Ryan will be back on the Trickbits Triumph in 2026 looking for a third Welsh Open title. How pleased are you to have him back?
"We're delighted. Ryan will once again ride our Trickbits Supersport machines and also campaign our SV700 Supertwin. He knows Aberdare Park inside out and we're looking forward to seeing what he can achieve this year. Hopefully we can give him the machinery to challenge for another Welsh Open title."
Lewis Jones has become an important part of the team over the last couple of years. Will he also be returning to Aberdare?
"Yes, Lewis will be with us again. He'll ride one of our Triumphs as well as his own Lightweight machine. I actually think Lewis looks like a completely different rider this season. Going back to club racing has allowed him to enjoy riding again after his time in British Superbikes, and I think that's showing in his confidence and performances.
"I'm really looking forward to seeing what he can do at Aberdare."
The Trickbits Supertwin has become a familiar sight around the roads. Are you planning to challenge in that class again?
"Definitely. We'll have the SV700 Supertwin at Aberdare with Ryan leading our challenge, and hopefully we'll arrive with all of the reliability issues behind us. The bike has shown plenty of potential—we just need everything to come together over the weekend."
Finally, what are the team's ambitions for the remainder of 2026?
"Our immediate goal is simply to arrive at Aberdare Park with well-prepared machinery and enjoy another fantastic weekend of racing. It's always one of the highlights of the year for us. The welcome we receive is second to none and the atmosphere is something very special.
"I'm genuinely looking forward to catching up with Derek, the whole Aberdare team, the Orange Army and everyone who works so hard to make this event happen every year. They're a huge part of what makes Aberdare such a special place to race."
With Ryan Dixon returning to chase a third Welsh Open crown, Lewis Jones continuing his development, and Trickbits Racing determined to put their mechanical frustrations behind them, the team looks set to play another major role in what promises to be a spectacular Samco Sport Aberdare Park Road Races 2026 sponsored by Samco Sport.
